John Matthew Moore, is a talented botanical artist with
a fresh approach to this well known genre.
Matthew's medium of choice is the velvety, chalk enriched watercolor
known as gouache, with which he excels in the mastery of color and attention
to detail. The opaque pigments of gouache enable Matthew to achieve stunning
effects ranging from light shining through petals to the deep, dark, rich
tones of his red tulips.
Though the inspiration for his works is drawn from the 17th and 18th
century botanical artists, Matthew's approach is fresh and modern. Unlike
many artists in this field, his paintings are larger than life with photo-realistic
effects, seeming to explode off the page while still maintaining their
scientific precision.
"My goal is to entice the viewer to stop and appreciate the subject
in a whole new way," M..M.
In recent years, Matthew's works have been garnering increasing publicity
and exposure. His paintings are represented in many prominent international
and residential and corporate collections. In addition, his works have
been placed in prestigious show homes including Southern Accents' 2000
Capital Design House in Washington, DC (Barry Dixon, designer) and the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Design House. Southern Accents featured
Matthew in an article about Southern botanical artists (March-April,
2001).
Matthew is represented in the DC metropolitan area by Susan Calloway Antique Prints and Fine Art of Georgetown (telephone: 202-965-4601).
